April Already! Planning for the Summer

31 March 2013
Weekly Reflection 25th – 31st of March 2013
One good thing about learning how to play right back, is that I know more about how to terrorise defenders. As a winger – I now know that off the ball, I can keep going inside and then outside again and then inside to give them the biggest headache ever. There were no games this week so I couldn’t get more match practice in, training’s were also relatively quiet.
Went to de Toekomst on Monday and it turns out that we came to the wrong session. But walking into the training grounds was very cool. It seems like anyone can just walk in. Really weird, but I guess it fits in with the Dutch way of being very open and liberal.
It’s the 1st of April already as I write this. Only 2 more months until I finish my first year of university study and then the beginning of summer holidays. Technically it’s “holidays”, but I won’t be needing a holiday as the last 8 months have already felt like a huge, amazing holiday for me.
The issue that’s been lingering on my mind is if I’m ready to give up the student life now. The question of if I’m good enough to play professionally is almost irrelevant. The question of when and where is relevant. The place where I would most likely start my professional career with the contacts I have, is in:
a) Lower league in Eastern Europe – Hungarian 2nd Division for example
b) Australia – A-league
Money is not a priority – infact money is not even one of the reasons I play to begin with. The priority is just to begin my career in the pro ranks.
The clock is ticking. I will be 20 years old this summer which just sounds ridiculous to me. I think it’s a good age to begin my career.
And now I know where and how to make friends with international students and finding accommodation near students, so I can most likely keep a good social life wherever I go.
The best thing to do now instead of worrying about it, is to see what kind of offers I get in the summer, compare & contrast and then make a final decision.

Goal Journal

My Vision
Long term goals
Play professionally by end of summer 2013
Short term goals
1. be more explosive
doing this!
General comment: Really focusing my workout exercises on more dynamic, explosive ones. Focus less on the arms now.
2. make a real habit of scanning alot
Have to focus on this.
General comment: Not scanning enough and not making a real habit when I could really shine out of tight positions.
3. Ongoing – Find out what makes great players, great. What separates the “great” from the “good.

4. Defend better

1. Play the long ball forward, instead of a risky passback.
2. Don’t let the attacker run inside of your position. Running inside is the quickest way through on goal.
I definitely do this more. What I still need to work on now is communication and who should be marking who.
5. Build LinkedIn network
Added a few contacts..
6. Plan better.
I need to be more efficent about exactly what I’m going to do in my workouts, rather than just make it up as I go.
accomplished: be stronger off the ball,  quicker plays
Plan & Checklist – Did 12 hours. Next Week 15 hours again.
Monday: training at ajax + economics exam
Tuesday: gym + training + game analysis
Wednesday: training at ajax? + accounting exam
Thursday: club training + stay behind
Friday: damsko session + gym
Sat: rest
Sunday: game

In 2009, I was an average soccer player with a dream. I started this blog to document my journey from local underdog to getting offered over $100,000 in soccer scholarships, a contract to play professionally and the experience of playing in Europe.
